Technical Masterpiece: Unveiling the Stellar Framework
At the heart of Stellar lies a sophisticated technological framework that orchestrates a symphony of sound and light. Two iRobota Uno boards, the brains of the operation, meticulously control four servo motors and LED strips, while two LeapMotion devices serve as ethereal conductors, translating human gestures into celestial commands.
Conceptual Brilliance: Bridging the Gap between Science and Art
Stellar embodies the profound connection between electromagnetic and sound waves, inviting visitors to explore the universe through a minimalistic yet immersive interface. As they interact with the installation, they embark on a quest to discover the secrets of specific stars, unraveling their stories through the language of sound.
Structure and Functionality: A Symphony of Motion and Light
The cylindrical structure of Stellar, adorned with shimmering LED lights, displays the prominent constellations of the northern sky. Two robotic arms, resembling celestial explorers, move with precision, aligning themselves with chosen stars. When a star is targeted, its information is transformed into sine waves, causing the star’s color to shift and evolve.
Data Analysis and Sound Generation: Translating Stellar Data into Sonic Expressions
Stellar ingeniously maps stellar data, such as temperature, brightness, and distance, to sound properties like frequency, amplitude, and duration. Colder stars emit lower-pitched sounds, brighter stars resonate louder, and distant stars produce longer-lasting tones. The background drone, a celestial canvas of white noise, subtly changes frequency based on the constellation’s area, creating a dynamic soundscape.
Production and Support: A Collaborative Endeavor
Stellar emerged from the creative crucible of the DE.MO./MOVIN’UP I Session 2015 project, receiving invaluable support from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage & Activities & Tourism and GAI – Association for the Circuit of the Young Italian Artists.
