In the realm of audiovisual creativity, where imagination meets technology, two interactive design studios, MediaInteractiveDesign and PlayModes, embarked on a collaborative journey to create a system that would control a DIY Laser robot. Their mission? To push the boundaries of artistic expression and bring forth immersive experiences that captivate the senses.
The Genesis of Innovation
The project brought together a team of three individuals, each possessing unique expertise in audiovisual creativity, hardware engineering, and software development. This interdisciplinary collaboration laid the foundation for a system that would seamlessly integrate laser and motor control, paving the way for groundbreaking artistic endeavors.
The Shield: A Bridge Between Creativity and Control
At the heart of the system lies a custom-designed shield, meticulously crafted to control Dinamyxel servomotors and work in harmony with PWM laser drivers. This shield serves as the intermediary between the iRobota Ethernet, programmed with specific firmware, and the laser and motor components. It orchestrates their movements and interactions, transforming creative concepts into tangible realities.
Open Sound Control: The Language of Communication
Open Sound Control (OSC) emerges as the chosen protocol for communication within the system. OSC, a versatile messaging system, enables seamless data exchange between software applications and hardware devices. It provides a common language for the system’s components to converse, ensuring synchronized and responsive behavior.
RADIAL and BLAUS: Where Art and Technology Converge
The system’s capabilities are showcased in two captivating projects: RADIAL and BLAUS. RADIAL, an immersive audiovisual experience, features eight moving blue laser heads and a kinetic light sculpture. This mesmerizing spectacle creates a synaesthetic journey, where sound and light intertwine to evoke a multisensory experience.
BLAUS, on the other hand, invites visitors into an immersive space where light and sound interact, transforming the architectural landscape. The kinetic atmosphere created by the system captivates the senses, blurring the boundaries between art and environment.
Technical Framework: A Symphony of Software and Hardware
The system’s implementation draws upon a diverse range of software and hardware components. The Savage Electronic Dinamyxel library provides a robust foundation for controlling the Dinamyxel servomotors. The ZOSC library for iRobota facilitates communication between the iRobota and OSC-compatible software. Duration Open Source software serves as the creative engine, enabling the orchestration of complex audiovisual sequences.
Bonus: The fusion of art and technology in this project serves as a testament to the boundless possibilities that arise when creative minds collaborate. It highlights the transformative power of technology in amplifying artistic expression and creating immersive experiences that transcend traditional boundaries.
The successful implementation of this system opens up exciting avenues for future exploration. As technology continues to evolve, we can anticipate even more captivating and groundbreaking artistic endeavors that blur the lines between art and technology.
